Our Story
Mecoco was formed in 2019 for the purpose of providing workplace experiences for disabled adults and young people, especially those with significant support needs. Our values focus on inclusion and quality. We have adapted every stage of the process so that anyone can be involved, irrespective of their level of support need, to either improve their employability or engage in a meaningful experience.
The name 'Mecoco' stands for 'meaningful contribution in the community'.
Meaningful
Opportunities
Mecoco was founded in 2019, based on the belief that all young people should have the opportunity to do something meaningful with their time.
Inclusion
At Mecoco, inclusion doesn’t just mean all disabled people, it means all people. Colleagues work together; some are disabled and some are not. Friendships are formed and a new understanding is created.
Contribution
The way we do it
At Mecoco we welcome everyone; we don't have any entrance requirements or tests. This means that our team includes those who need quite a bit of extra support, but we find ways for them to do meaningful work.
We have designed the product, processes and equipment to make sure that as many people as possible can be involved.
Letting go of the idea of "productivity" and embracing a wider concept of what contribution looks like is part of our message.
The product
From the very beginning, it was important to us that Mecoco's product was just as good, if not better than any other home fragrances available in the shops and online.
There are no buts at Mecoco - only ands.
- Our labels have been chosen for their ease of application - and they are colourful and smart.
- Our melts are poured into silicone moulds so they are easy to unmould and package - and they come in the most beautiful shapes and designs.
- We have had custom tools made to fix the wicks in tins and jars - and our candles burn beautifully.
The workshop
In 2020, Mecoco moved to our own workshop in Dalry, North Ayrshire. The workshop has undergone a number of improvements since, including an accessible toilet, kitchen facilities and a designated area for a Changing Places toilet.
Community
An inclusive team
At Mecoco inclusion doesn't just mean all disabled people, it means ALL PEOPLE.
We are a business where colleagues work together, some disabled and some not. Friendships are forged, a new understanding is created and a beautiful workplace is flourishing.
We currently have 20 colleagues in the team, all volunteering and they all come for work experience one shift each week.
Our impact beyond the workshop
Our influence doesn't stop at the workshop shutters.
By attending events and pop-up shops we can share our story with customers. We love to get out and meet people and show our local community and beyond what amazing products we produce.
And there's more:
- Family and friends develop a new found pride.
- Professionals who work with our disabled colleagues develop greater aspirations for people with high levels of support need.
- Other employers start to see that there is a different, and more inclusive way to work.
